The viability of creating off-shore reefs to prevent erosion along Old Bar beach was examined by an expert in the field today.

Dr Shaw Mead believes the structures could help slow or stop erosion, but says there’s still a lot of research needed.

The service has been inundated with hundreds of cats and their litters, and desperately wants to see them re-homed.

COFFS CREEK WALK UPGRADE

The transformation of the Coffs Creek Walk into a shared pedestrian and cycleway will begin at the end of this month.

The upgrade of the nine-kilometre route around the creek will cost $2-million.

The project was the brainchild of Coffs Harbour philanthropists Barbara Hogbin and her late husband Allen, who donated half of the funding.

The federal government matched their donation last November.

The popular pathway links the CBD with the Botanic Gardens, Jetty Beach and Park Beach.

SAWTELL POLICE STATION CLOSED

Sawtell police station will effectively close it’s doors due to a lack of healthy officers to man the centre.

Deputy Police Commissioner David Owens expressed his concern over the high number of officers on sick leave within Coffs-Clarence Area Command, when he visited the area on Wednesday.

Since then a decision has been made to shut the doors of Sawtell station until enough officers are back from leave.

Sawtell and its surrounds will be patrolled by squad cars, with officers working out of Coffs Harbour police station.

Eight illegally modified cars are tonight in a police lock-up, while dozens of so-called hoons have been left with hefty fines after a police blitz.

Officers say at least 400 people gathered at Kooragang to either drag race, do burnouts, or egg drivers on.
