EROSION CONTROL FOR ILUKA

The Clarence Valley Council is undertaking erosion control measures on the banks of the Clarence River at Iluka.

$300,000 will be spent on the project which will involve additional sand being pumped onto a beach, riverbank stabilisation works and the construction of several boardwalks.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

COFFS SEEKS RATE HIKE

Coffs Harbour homeowners could face a 4.4 per cent rate hike to pay for flood mitigation works.

The council decided last night that it would ask the state government to approve the increase, above the capped limit, to help pay for the $18-million project.

The works have included a large scale cleanup of creeks and waterways with thousands of tonnes of rubbish removed.

Several water retention dams are also being constructed throughout the city to slow water flows during major rain events such as those last year which created flooding.

The damage bill from the March flood topped $50-million.

COFFS WOMEN DOMINATE SURFBOATS

The Coffs Harbour open women’s surfboat crew are confident of continuing their good run in next week’s national titles at Kurrawa.

The crew dominated this season’s North Coast Surfboat Series.

TWO DEAD IN PACIFIC HIGHWAY HEAD-ON

The Pacific Highway has claimed two more lives, after a head-on collision in Northern New South Wales.

Two cars collided 15 kilometres south of New Italy around 8am, in what an NBN reporter on the scene has described as greasy conditions.

A man and woman in their 70s were killed, while two men in their 20s were injured. They were taken taken to Lismore Base Hospital with neck, head and abdominal injuries.

Police say a northbound Commodore carrying the younger men crossed into the path of the elderly couple’s car.

The north and southbound lanes of the highway have been closed, with motorists advised to take the Summerland Way.

NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR INJURIES FROM QUAKE

An earthquake measurig 3.4 on the Richter Scale was felt in parts of the mid north coast in the early hours of Friday morning.

Residents from Port Stephens to Newcastle have told how they felt the earth move around 3.30am, others have told how a shudder woke them from their sleep.

The shake lasted around 10 seconds.

There have been no reports of damage or people injured.

Canberra based Kevin McCue told NBN this morning’s quake was one of three minor quakes that have been felt across New South Wales this week.

OCCY KNOCKED OUT OF SURFEST IN HIS OPENING HEAT

Dane Bird claimed the biggest scalp of his fledgling career on what proved to be a very happy 23rd birthday.

COAL WORRIES FOR HORSE STUDS

There are concerns for the future of the Hunter Valley’s billion-dollar thoroughbred industry, following coal exploration licences being granted for large parcels of land surrounding major horse studs.

Muswellbrook Council says the community will never accept mining in those areas.

MINERALS COUNCIL ATTACKS COURT RULING

The New South Wales Minerals Council has hit back after the Supreme Court ruled land access agreements on the Liverpool Plains weren’t properly negotiated.

The council claims thousand of mining jobs will now be put at risk, but farmers say the council is only trying to pressure the state government into changing legislation.
