DOLPHIN DILEMMA

September 29, 2008

Two dolphins stuck in a man made lake in Ballina are being monitored around the clock by a Sea World expert.

The mother and her calf entered Lake Prospect almost two weeks ago but a sand bar is blocking their return to the ocean.

Two attempts to free the dolphins were unsuccessful yesterday, and rescue crews are concerned their food supply will be run out.

The dolphin expert will feed the pair bream and whiting until another rescue plan can be devised.

“It’s going to be his sole job to try and get them to eat everyday or at least make sure they are eating and keep an eye on them,” said Rochelle Ferris of Australian Seabird Rescue.

They are also concerned with dolphin dehydration.

“If the tides become a bit low and there’s not a lot of flush through the lake then the salinity of the lake could be quite high. If it rains a lot the salinity could be low. Either side of the salinity level isn’t very good for the dolphin’s health,” she addded.
