LIVING HISTORY
July 5, 2008
From 1949 to 1960, thousands of European refugees and immigrants came to the lower Hunter to settle at the Greta Migrant Camp.
Now nearly 50 years after the camp’s closure, photographs are being collected and displayed on the internet.
It’s images of everyday life at the Greta Migrant Camp, that are being sought.
Migrant Camp website creator Uri Windt says, “The original migrant camp at Greta is going to be redeveloped shortly, and it’s very important to capture the history of the site.”
Over the past few weeks photo roundups have been held across the Hunter, for former camp residents to meet and add their photos to the developing website.
It’s provided people like Christine Ostermann the chance to share their camp experiences and track down old friends. She says, “I’ve got heaps because dad used to be a jack of all trades, but one of the things he used to do for everybody was take photos and develop them.”
The photographs can be viewed on www.anvilcreek.com.
